SHINIGAMI & THE DRAGON
Late afternoon light spilled in through the windows of the practice hall, bathing the two figures within in its warm, golden glow. Neither noticed it's splendid beauty, however, for they were engaged in mortal combat. It was a grim dance, complete with flashing swords. The air was filled with the ringing of steel on steel. They advanced, retreated, both in deadly earnest, striving for the kill...
The larger of the two, Akunin, was a powerfully built man with thick, black, shoulder length hair and eyes the color of night. He moved, muscles rippling, with the pent up energy of a tiger. His opponent, Duo, was a mere youth, whose thick, chestnut hair was pulled back in a loose braid that swung below the small of his back. He was slim and graceful with laughing,
violet eyes . Both wore white training gis tied with belts depicting their color of rank. Akunin's was red, Duo's blue.
They clashed. Akunin whipped his blade around with a snarl. Duo seemed to dance
away from the attack without effort, keeping just out of range. They circled each other warily.
They faced each other, swords at the ready, their labored breathing loud in the vast
white-paneled expanse of the dojo, sweat dripping down their faces.
Once again they charged, swords flying, and once again the youth slipped away untouched, a lazy grin playing over his face, his eyes flashing merrily.
The larger man found his inability to make contact annoying. He felt his iron grip on his control slip a little every time his target smoothly avoided his attacks. He gritted his teeth and fought harder, putting all his strength into each furious assault. It really irked him that this reed slim youth should have such skill with a sword. He moved with a fluid, feline grace, like a dancer. Despite his reluctance to kill and the fact that he never attacked aggressively enough, Duo was an excellent swordsman. It seemed to Akunin to be a contradiction in terms.
Duo twirled lightly away from yet another of Akunin's thrusts with a grin. He could read the signs of building rage in his opponent, the narrowed eyes, the clenched jaw. The older man's knuckles were white as he gripped the hilt of his sword. Akunin was a good swordsman, no doubt about that, but he was far too aggressive. He charged with the blind fury of a bull when he became enraged. It was easiest to defeat his sparing partner when he was angry, but, on the other hand, it was also more dangerous to fight him. The braided youth was reminded of what their master had often said. "Don't let your emotions control you in battle.--it is you who must control them."
A sudden wave of sadness engulfed the boy. His grin faltered as he thought of his master and his upcoming 'retirement' He would miss the old man.....
(An opening!) Akunin, sensing his opponent's distraction, swung mightily, putting all of his rage and frustration into that one blow.
Duo barely stepped back in time to avoid the viscous assult, almost stumbling in his haste. With a liquid purr, his shirt sleeve ripped . Damn ....he'd allowed his attention to slip. Dropping his sword, he clutched at his left arm which now hung uselessly at his side. Thick ribbons of blood soaked through his fingers as waves of searing pain washed down his arm.
Duo glared reproachfully at his sparring partner.
"Hey, no fair!"
Akunin smiled icily and thrust his blade at the youth's throat, stopping just under the
chin, before fatal penetration.
"Life isn't fair, boy, and neither is Death!"
Duo froze, eyes wide. The taste of fear flooded his mouth, thick and unpleasant.
"Never drop your guard." Akunin snarled. "A mistake like that could get you killed." He prodded the smooth flesh of Duo's neck to make his point.
Duo winced at the sharp pain. Point made.
Akunin laughed suddenly, low and deep. A villains laugh. (I got you)
( Does he practice that or what? ) Duo wondered as shivers rolled down his spine.
"Sorry 'bout that." the older man sheathed his sword and smacked the smaller on the
back, staggering him for a moment. "You must really be under the weather, if I can score on
you D-chan."
He turned abruptly and headed towards the dojo's exit, still laughing. "Come on." He called over his shoulder, "Let's get that scratch taken care of."
(Scratch?! One second slower and he would have take my arm off!)
Duo kept a wary eye on Akunin as he made his way to the locker room.
