31_days. November 21 challenge – ‘The real world is out there somewhere’
I just wanted to work on something other than my NaNo project, preferably something that had either a word or time limit.
‘This cannot be happening,’ Leon’s mind screamed as he fought his way through the jungle-like foliage. Branches lashed his face and arms, treacherous vines entwined about his sneakers, tripping him, sending him sprawling into the dirt. The force of the landing jolted his teeth together and his revolver flew from his grasp and bounced under a nearby bush.
“This fucking can’t be real!” He grunted, scrambling to his knees to retrieve his only weapon. Not that it was doing him much good now. He only had one shot left.
But the blood flowing from his many wounds was real. The sound of those… those things that pursued him was also real enough, real enough to hurt him. Real enough to kill.
“Too real, if you asked me,” Stumbling, Leon crossed over to the bush and fell to his knees, reaching his arm up under to retrieve his gun. “Where in Hell did D’s old man get these creatures? It’s like their straight out of Jurassic Park… or some little kid’s nightmares.”
He pawed under the foliage but came up empty handed. Growling in frustration, he pushed his arm even further, hand desperately searching for his gun… for a weapon… for anything. Almost simultaneously he came across the smooth handle of his service revolver and a rather large piece of wood. Breathing a sigh of relief, he dragged them both out.
“Only this is a fucking high rise luxury apartment for God’s sake, not a Hollywood movie set,” he continued breathlessly, ”the nightmare is mine, and there doesn’t seem to be a way out of this mess.”
Angrily, Leon holstered his pistol, determined to save the last shot for a real emergency. If he couldn’t make it out of here… if he was going to die…it would be his way. He’d rather eat his gun than allow some side show freak animals tear him limb from limb.
“But I am going to make it out of here,” Leon swore vehemently. “I’m not going to give that twisted, sadistic bastard the satisfaction of seeing me die. Now or ever.
The bushes rustled and he scrambled to his knees despite the pain, chunk of wood clenched in his hand. His heart beat in his ears, impossibly loud, impossibly fast.
A strange dragon-like creature no bigger than a large cat with three yellow eyes slunk out of the bushes, growling and snarling. It crouched low eyes narrowed and lunched itself at him with amazing speed.
With a primal yell of rage, Leon swung his wooden club like a baseball bat as hard as he could. It caught the dragon just above the temple and the crack of bone was the sweetest sound he had ever heard.
Laughing almost hysterically, Leon threw back his head. “You want a piece of me, huh?" He yelled for all the animals to hear, “Well come on then, show me what you got! The real world is out there somewhere, damn it, and I am going to find it!”
