The match shook as Leon lit the votive candle.

She’d always loved candles, he remembered, their fragrance and soft light.

As the silence of the church enveloped him, he bowed his head, clasped his hands. He didn’t know why he’d come, hadn’t been to church in years. But there was no one to talk to. No one he trusted with this pain.

Blinking back tears, he withdrew a photograph of a toddler with cake smeared on his lips. It had arrived that morning. God, it hurt to see his mother’s eyes staring back at him like that.

“Happy birthday, kiddo.”

THE END

A/N: I don't think I made this drabble very clear and for that I am sorry. The prompt, Open Door, in this case refers to the church and the fact that it's doors are be open for those in need at any give time. I don't know if this is always the case, but if not then it should be.

According to the series, Leon was eighteen when his mother died giving birth to Chris. I personally don't think Leon spent any time with his brother before Chris came to live with him in LA, in fact, subconsciously, I think he held his mother's death against him - blamed him, if you will.

This drabble is intended to take place two years after his mother's death. So the candle he lit would be for her in her memory. But the same day marks both his mother's death and Chris' birthday. I think the fact that Chris has her eyes would be hard on Leon because in not dealing with his brother for so long, I think he never fully came to terms with her dying.

But that's just my take on the story. Others may see things in a different light.

Oh wow, I love how you bring up Leon's mother, especially since she seemed so pivotal to his development. I like it very much.

Aww, what a beautiful drabble. Leon's such a big softie, but he tries so hard to keep that side of him under wraps.

This was lovely! I'm glad you put the note at the end, because I'd forgotten all about the circumstances of Chris coming to live with Leon.

Very nice emotion! I could feel the silence in the church.
