Notes: This started out as a team effort between me and my sister, but she bailed on me.

The gray haired woman had just finished cleaning the wound and reached to grab a jar of antibiotic ointment. She looked up into the violet eyes of the boy sitting on the examination table. Their gazes locked for a moment. The barest trace of a smile crossed the woman's lined face.

"This may hurt a little, you know."

The long braided youth nodded once, silently. It couldn't possibly hurt more than it did right now.

He was wrong.

As soon as the elderly doctor applied the ointment, a terrible stinging caused the boy to pull away from her touch with a hissing gasp of pain.

Akunin, lounging on a nearby chair, smirked at his kowhai*. "Baby."

Duo was on his feet in a flash of movement, facing his sempai*, face flushed with indignation. "Who're you calling a baby?!" he snapped, hands balled into fists, violet eyes flashing.

The older man rose slowly to his feet. He towered over the boy by at least a foot and easily outweighed him by fifty pounds, if not more. Still, the younger boy refused to be intimidated. He didn't avert his heated glare or give the smallest inch. He met the others stare firmly, even if he had to crane his neck to do so. He'd had all he could take from the First Lieutenant for one day.

Akunin grinned down at Duo. "You are such a baby." He spoke the words slowly, emphasizing each so there would be no misunderstanding.

The situation might have resulted in blows had not Dr. Chapel stood in a huff. "You two, stop it!" she snapped, inserting her plump body between the two antagonists. "You're both acting like children!" Privately she had to agree with Akunin...Duo'd always been a bit of a baby when it came to going to the doctor's. But she wasn't about to give Akunin the satisfaction by agreeing with him.

Whirling towards Akunin, she jabbed the taller man in the chest. "Stop provoking Duo, Akunin."

Akunin sighed, shrugged his shoulders, and retreated silently to his seat.

Duo was grinning ear to ear at his sempai's reprimand, when Dr Chapel turned and gave him a taste of the same medicine.

"Duo, sit down!"

Duo shot Akunin a dark scowl, and stuck his tongue out at the older man.

"Now!" The Doctor ordered.

The youth complied, rolling his eyes. "Sheesh!" he exclaimed plopping down on the table.

Akunin laughed at the boy's childish antics. He couldn't seem to be able help himself. (If we'd meet in another place...another time...If things could've been different between us, I might actually have liked that boy.) Akunin thought. (He's so open and full of spirit...unlike me...) Akunin's smile faded and he shook his head, clearing such thoughts from his mind. There was no place in his life for such sentimental thinking. Only the here and now mattered.

While she worked on stitching up Duo's wound, Dr. Chapel began to give the two visitors to her clinic the rough side of her tongue. What were they thinking? The point of sword practice was not to injure each other, but to improve their skills. They had to be more careful. They were only given one body, after all.

While the old woman scolded the two men freely, she kept her real thoughts and feelings to herself, at least for now. She had been horrified when she had been informed that her nephew, Duo Maxwell, had been injured in a training battle. She had been enraged at First Lieutenant Akunin who was supposed to be responsible enough to know better. However, right now was not the time or place to vent her frustration. The important thing was that Duo had not been hurt too badly, although twenty-seven stitches was pushing it a little. He would carry the scar for the rest of his life. Other than that, there was no signs of permanent damage.

Akunin deigned not to pay any attention to her scolding. Was it his fault Duo was so slow...?

She addressed Akunin directly without taking her eyes from her work. "Why were you training with real swords rather than the wooden boukken* in the first place? You're the senior officer, you should know better!"

Akunin addressed his reply towards Duo. "Because only babies use boukken. It takes a real man to use a live blade." He smirked as Duo scowled at him. The Doctor chose to ignore the tone of voice the First Lieutenant used. She knew he was just trying to get a rise out of her patient.

A messenger in black livery arrived as the doctor was finishing up the wrap on Duo's arm. He knocked smartly against the open door to announce his presence, although all three had known immediately he was there.

She had a pretty good idea why the messenger had arrived. Those two would be in for a rough time of it. Especially the boy. Everyone knew how close he and Lord Shinigami were.

"....Are Lieutenants Akunin Kistarr and Duo Maxwell here?"

"Ah, yes...."

"His excellency, Lord Shinigami requests your presence, sirs."

The doctor was unimpressed... "Yes, yes...in a moment...let me finish with this bandage..." she snapped impatiently.

Akunin stood and stretched hugely. "Let's go, Duo. You know the master doesn't like to be kept waiting...." He laughed his villain's laugh as he went out the door.

Duo hopped off the table. "Yeah....Thanks a lot, Dr. Chapel... " He scooped up his ruined gi and shrugged it on absently.

Dr. Chapel smiled broadly. "Don't worry 'bout it, kiddo....just try to be more careful, 'kay?" She winked at him..."If you ended up dead Shinigami would kill you!" She chuckled at her own joke.

Duo laughed shortly. "You're a sick, sick, woman, Doctor!" He waved as he dashed out of the clinic to catch up with Akunin.

"See ya later!" He called back over his shoulder.

She stepped into the hall and called after his retreating form, "I'd better not! "

She shut the door behind her and leaned against it. (Shinigami....is your time drawing near...?) Absently she wiped away a tear.
