Angrily a grown Inu Yasha leapt into the trees and flung himself down
on one of the larger limbs. The rough bark of the trunk scraped along
the back of his scarlet robes. He found the tree's solid presence
comforting for he knew that up here, hidden in the leaves, with the
tree to his back, nobody could sneak up behind him.

Breathing deeply he laid his head back and morosely watched the
dappled rays of sunlight through leaves that danced merrily in the
breeze. It was a soothing sound and soon Inu Yasha closed his amber
eyes and tried to relax, but the memories simply wouldn't go away.

(It wasn't fair!) He mentally fumed. (I hadn't been bothering them!)

Inu Yasha's hands curled into fists at the memory that still burned
through his mind. The anger was as fresh now as it had been all those
years ago. Deep in his heart, he knew that those three village boys
had bullied him because he was only a HALF demon. He seriously
doubted that they would have bothered him at all if he had been a
full-fledged demon like his half- brother, Sesshomaru.

Those three hateful boys attacked Inu Yasha as he came sputtering up
to the surface. He tried to escape, to run away, but several large,
hurting hands caught his tiny wrists in powerful grips and dug
calloused fingers into his tender skin. He cried out in pain as his
arms were twisted behind his back with such savage force that tears
sprung up in the corner of his wide, golden eyes.

"Oh, poor little puppy! Are we being a little too rough?" Sneered
Toshiyuki, who stood tall before Inu Yasha with his large hands
planted on lean hips. His friends laughed uproariously at this
taunting and their cruel, mocking laughter somehow hurt worse than
their hands.

"Let go of me!" Inu Yasha demanded, and his voice trembled only a
little as he did his best to glare defiantly up at the ironsmith's
son.

"Or what?" Toshiyuki spat. "You'll go tell your worthless mommy?"

"You leave my mother alone!" Inu Yasha screamed shrilly.

A hot rage surged through the half-demon's body at the slur against
his mother and without thinking his small foot shot out and came into
solid contact with Toshiyuki's knee. With a sharp cry the older boy
fell back into the water as his knee gave out on him. The arms
holding him loosened for a second and with power born of anger, Inu
Yasha managed to break free.

He heard Toshiyuki shouting, "Get him, Yusaku!" as he ran away, his
arms and legs pumping furiously. The water dragged at him making it
difficult to move and his heart beat wildly in his chest as he heard
sounds of pursuit. He tried to go faster, but the boy behind him,
probably the before mentioned Yusaku, was years older, taller,
stronger, and much faster.

Red darts of pain ripped through Inu Yasha's scalp as rough fingers
snatched hold of his long silver hair and yanked viciously, snapping
his head back. He screamed in pain and his hands started to fly up to
his hair to yank it out of the boy's grasp, but one second later
strong arms wrapped around his chest, effectively pinning his arms to
his side. He squirmed and struggled with all of his might, but his
captor lifted him up easily from the ground and carried him, kicking
and screaming, back to Toshiyuki.

"Let go of me, you big bully! Damn it, let GO!"

Without ceremony, Inu Yasha was dumped down into the cool, shining
water and forced to his knees in front of the ironsmith's son, whose
face was red and blotchy with rage.

In the distance, a bird sang out and was answered by another. The sun
danced along the smooth surface of the water and transformed it into
hundreds of sparkling diamonds. The freshening breeze played
invisible fingers through the green canopy. All these things and more
Inu Yasha sensed, yet they didn't register in his mind. He had bigger
things to worry about.

Once again his hands were dragged behind his back but this time he
didn't give them the satisfaction of hearing him cry out in pain. He
gritted his teeth and angrily glared up at the older boy, but fear
pooled thick in his stomach for he knew that whatever these boys had
in store for him before would be nothing compared to what they
intended to do to him now.

The kick was so fast, so unexpected, that Inu Yasha barely saw it
coming. Bright agony flared in his stomach where the blow had landed
and all of the air was forced out of his body in one painful whoosh.
He doubled over, coughing and gasping for air, trying desperately to
relearn how to breathe. But before he could draw a proper breath
fresh pain erupted from his scalp as hands fisted in his hair and
pulled him roughly to his feet.

Toshiyuki's cold black eyes were full of hatred as he glared at the
half- demon. His entire body was shaking with an uncontrollable rage
that was no doubt directed entirely at the little boy that squirmed
and twisted in his grasp.

"Who in Hell do you think you are, you worthless little cur!"
Toshiyuki's breath puffed hot in Inu Yasha's face and little beads of
spittle flew from his mouth. "How dare you lay so much as a toe on a
human being! I'm going to personally teach you a lesson you won't
ever forget! Filthy mongrel!"

Toshiyuki slammed his fist into Inu Yasha's face and the force of the
blow would have sent the small boy reeling if Yusaku hadn't been
holding him. Blinding white stars burst before his eyes and the
copper taste of blood filled his mouth. The pain was somehow
intensified by the shame and anger he felt at being small and weak
and at the mercy of these miserable humans.

More blows landed, too fast and too many to count, each one more
painful than the last. Only when he was puffing for breath did
Toshiyuki stop hitting the helpless boy before him who now lay limp
and bloody in the Yusaku's arms. His head hung low and a silver
curtain of hair obscured his swollen face.

"I think he's had enough, Toshiyuki!" The boy at his back said
anxiously, laying one restraining hand on his shoulder.

Toshiyuki shrugged off the hand angrily. "He's had enough when I said
he's had enough, Tomo." Fuming, he turned his attention back to his
target.

"I don't ever want to see your worthless hide here ever again!" He
snarled fiercely. "Do you hear me, whelp?"

Slowly, so slowly, Inu Yasha raised his head and managed to glare at
his assailant through the thick tangles of his hair. His body
screamed in pain and his ears were ringing but he met those cold
black eyes squarely and a boiling rage filled his body. His lips
moved but no sound came forth. He cleared his throat and spat a
mouthful of blood into the water. When he finally managed to find his
voice, it was low and hoarse.

"Go... to... Hell."

Enraged at this display of defiance, Toshiyuki wrapped his calloused
hands around Inu Yasha's neck, dragged him out of Yusaku's arms and
pushed him down under the surface of the water. Small arms and legs
flailed helplessly, striking the enraged villager in the chest and
arms, but he ignored them and continued to hold the half-demon
underwater.

Inu Yasha's lungs burned and screamed for oxygen and black dots
gobbled away at his vision as his consciousness slipped away. His
struggles slowed then stopped altogether as the strength left his
body and a calm, dreamy sort of peace filled him up and wiped away
all of his fear. Muffled through the water he heard the sounds of
voices, but they were unimportant somehow, only dim sounds without
meaning. His eyes slid closed and he finally surrendered to the
darkness.

Suddenly he was yanked roughly to the surface and Inu Yasha gasped
then started coughing violently as the air seared down his damaged
lungs like fire. Laughing derisively, Toshiyuki dragged him to shore
and left him limp and semi-conscious on the beach.

Coughing and retching onto the dirt and sand, Inu Yasha lay trembling
uncontrollably at the villager's feet. His long white hair was
splattered with mud, his small body covered with bruises. Toshiyuki
squatted down and tilted the little boy's head back roughly and
glared into his amber eyes. An ugly smile twisted his lips.

"That'll teach you to stay out of our river, you filthy animal!"
Toshiyuki sneered into Inu Yasha's swollen face.

Inu Yasha stared at him mutely, and Toshiyuki released him with a
contemptuous snort.

"Come on, boys, we've wasted enough time here today. Let's go home."

Inu Yasha huddled silently on the ground, lacking the strength to
move or even cry. With tired eyes, he watched the three humans as
they disappeared into the woods and their cruel laughter burned his
sensitive ears long after they were gone.
