With a groan, Wufei slowly opened his eyes then promptly squeezed them shut again, averting his head, trying to blot out the hot glare of the sun, which was streaming in through the western window. The world outside was awash in gold, all hazy and peaceful. White fluffy clouds drifted lazily across a vividly blue sky of impossible beauty and depth. Raising one hand to block the bright light, he muttered thickly, “Someone turn off the lights…”
A faint rustling of cloth was heard, followed by soft footsteps over tile. A delicate floral scent tickled Wufei’s nose, light and powdery and smelling so right, so familiar… The harsh rattle of heavy drapes being drawn plunging the room into blessed darkness. The sound of footsteps came closer and stopped at the head of the bed. The tiny click of the lamp being switched on. The musical tinkling of ice cubes in water, then something smooth and cool was pressed against his lips. The woman, and it HAD to be a woman- who else would wear such flowery scented perfume – slid one delicate hand behind his neck and eased him into a more upright position. Water, cold enough to make his teeth ache, slid smoothly down Wufei’s parched throat. Greedily he drank until it was gone, never opening his eyes. Then he lay back feeling strangely content. His benefactor, his mysterious angel spoke for the first time and her voice was maddingly, impossibly familiar.
“There you go! You must have been very thirsty!”
(No! No, it can’t be…I must be dreaming! She’s…not…)
“M-Meilan?”
“Yes, dear?”
(Impossible! It must be a coincident. Yes, that’s it! A coincident! Same perfume, same voice…) Wufei opened his eyes slowly and gazed up into the dark pools of his wife’s eyes. Dark sparkling orbs brimming over with love meet Wufei’s own unbelieving gaze.
(Same beautiful eyes, same hair, dark as a raven’s wing, same face, so lovely…how can this BE?)
“Meilan…” his voice hitched, throat clicking as long suppressed emotions boiled to the surface. Happiness, longing…love, they all battled to be expressed. Tears welled up and for once Wufei did not care who would see them.
Meilan sank to the mattress, which shifted under the additional weight with a faint squeak of protest. Her own eyes shimmered and danced, the glow of the lamp mirrored in those two lovely orbs. Carefully laying her head on Wufei’s bare chest, she wrapped thin arms about the husband who had finally been returned to her. Hot tears flowed down her face to splash against his smooth chest, just above the bandages, which stood out in sharp contrast against his bronze skin.
(If that bullet had hit just one inch lower, Wufei would have died!) The very thought of losing the man she loved sent shivers of dread coursing down the young woman’s spine. Lifting her head, she pressed soft lips against those that she had feared would never utter sound again.
A blaze of intense emotion shot through Wufei’s body at the touch of those smooth lips. Fire surged, setting his blood ablaze in a sudden wash of desire. Shaking hands plunged into the silken depths of Meilan’s hair, as he brought her closer, and closer still, afraid to let go lest she disappear in a puff of smoke. He frantically rained fevered kisses down on her lips, her eyes, her nose.
“I love you,” he whispered hoarsely, urgently, pressing soft lingering kisses down on her upturned face. “Oh, God! I have missed you…. so much…so VERY much!”
Meilan laughed breathily, like a favorite song it played over Wufei’s nerves, tickling, teasing. How he had missed that sound. “Your acting like you haven’t seen me in years!”
“It feels more like an eternity,” Wufei whispered against her cheek, his voice trembling slightly.
Wufei pressed his lips to her warm soft flesh and rediscovered her temples, her smooth brow, the long line of her neck, the hollow of her throat, before making his way back up the side of her neck, searching until he found the delicate shell of her ear. His pink tongue flicked out, tasting, exploring. Meilan shuddered in delightful anticipation then gasped softly as her husband finally took her earlobe into his hot, moist mouth and suckled contentedly making soft sounds of pleasure deep in his throat. Moaning softly, giving into an ever-increasing state of arousal, Meilan arched her back, offering up more of herself to that fierce desire, those searing kisses.
Face flushed, Wufei released her lobe and with trembling hands fumbled helplessly along the front of his wife’s white blouse until, with that intoxicatingly breathy laugh, Meilan shooed his hands gently away and began to unfasten the buttons herself, slowly, one by one, a small seductive smile playing along her lips. The shirt slid over smooth shoulders with a soft sigh of silk. Wufei’s eyes devoured his wife’s body, drank it in, savoring every delightful exposed inch, the swell of her breasts, the dip of her waist. Hesitantly, he cupped her bosom with his hands, running his thumbs over the soft tissue in slow, endless circles and felt the small nipples contract and harden under the scratchy lace of her brassier. Fingers continued to trace the pattern delicately, teasingly. Meilan closed her eyes and surrendered to the sensations that coursed through her flesh.
Wufei tugged lightly at the smooth white material, a grin playing along his mouth. “Off!” He ordered, voice husky with rising passion. Meilan leaned over and planted a kiss against the tip of his nose her breasts brushing lightly against Wufei’s smoothly muscular chest. It was almost too much for the poor man to bear. A soft moan escaped his fevered lips.
“You wish is my desire…” She whispered saucily before straightening up and reaching behind her back to unfasten the clasps.
“Whoa, whoa there, you lovebirds! There are kids present!”
Both Meilan and Wufei gasped sharply and with flaming faces whirled around at the sound of that voice. They had been so preoccupied that they hadn’t even heard the door open. How embarrassing! Meilan hurriedly fastened the buttons of her blouse, missing a few in her haste, and rose off of the bed to greet their visitor, running her hands through her hair to push the strands away from her flushed face.
Duo stood in the doorway, staring at the young couple, grinning like a complete idiot. Obviously, Wufei was feeling MUCH better! A little girl approximately four years old with huge black eyes and long shimmering black hair dressed in an adorable red jumper with matching patent leather shoes and white frilly socks clung to his jeans while he held in his arms a small baby boy in a blue one piece with the same hair and eyes as his sister. The baby gurgled happily, slobbering contentedly on one small chunky fist. The little girl turned large questioning eyes up towards the violet-eyed man she adored.
“Unka D?” asked the little girl, “What’re mommy an’ daddy doin’?”
Duo dropped a wink at Wufei, “Your mommy’s just checking your daddy’s blood pressure.” He replied, hefting the heavy baby onto one narrow hip and grinning at Wufei’s look of disbelief. His eyes were so wide, like saucers! If they got any bigger, they would probably pop!
“Oh. ‘Kay.” The child nodded happily, apparently accepting this answer.
Meilan took the baby from Duo’s arms and smiled up into those violet eyes. “Thanks for watching them for me, Duo! I really appreciate all of your help.” She glanced down at the little girl, “Ah Mei, why don’t you go say ‘hi’ to your daddy?” The little girl set off towards the hospital bed where a dumbfounded Wufei watched her approach with some trepidation.
“Hey, no problem, Meilan. I aim to please. You’ve got some terrific kids, a couple of real sweeties, ya know? You two are really lucky!” Duo raised his arms and laced his fingers behind his head, then stretching them up over his head. A small wistful smile played along the American’s face.
Meilan laughed and strode back towards the bed, Duo trailed along, still smiling. “You only say that because you don’t have to LIVE with these two little monsters!”
“Yeah, you’re probably right! If they get too fussy, I just hand them back over to Mom!”
Catching the slur against her good nature, the little girl whirled around to face the two grown-ups, her long hair fanning out behind her. “I’m not a monster,” she huffed indignantly, stamping one tiny foot. “I’m NOT!” Another small stomp.
“Oh, but you are,” laughed Duo, squatting down besides Ah Mei and ruffling her silky hair. “You just don’t know it yet!” So saying the American hooked his fingers into claws and growled playfully at the wide-eyed child, who shrieked high-pitched laughter.
Realizing that her Uncle Duo must be joking with her, Ah Mei gave the thin man a final squeeze then skipped off once more towards the bed, flinging herself whole heartedly at her daddy. Duo grinned, his eyes sparkling with humor at the muffled protests from the injured man.
“Well, folks,” Duo announced, turning towards the door, “I don’t know about you, but I am in desperate need of some adult conversation! I’ll see you at work in two weeks, Wufei! See ya!”
A chorus of good byes filled the small hospital room at the American’s departure.
“Hi, Daddy!” Clamored Ah Mei, “I missed you! This much!” Tiny arms spread wide to show just how much the little girl had missed her daddy. She missed hitting Wufei in the face by a fraction of an inch. Without even a pause the talkative preschooler continued her chatter. “Did you miss me? Huh? Did ya, did ya, did ya?” The small child climbed up into the astonished man’s lap and wrapping her baby arms about his neck, planted a loud smack on his cheek giggling happily.
Meilan sat down besides her husband, her face aglow with joy, cooing merrily to the little baby in her arms in a high singsong voice. “Did you miss your Daddums, hmmm? Did you miss him? I think you did! Yes! I think you did!” She extended the small infant towards the wide-eyed Wufei who took the offered bundle gingerly as if the baby would break if not handled with the utmost care. Astonishment was written plainly on his face.
“Well, now, who do we have here?” As Wufei gazed intently into that cherubic face, a sense of profound wonder filled him. These children apparently belonged to him, to him… and to Meilan. They were members of his family! Black eyes softened, lips quirked into a faint smile.
“You look just like I did when I was a baby.” Wufei’s voice was soft and filled with awe. He pulled the tiny infant into a gentle embrace, cradled against the warmth of his sculpted chest. The baby really was a spitting image of him when he had been a babe. And he had the photos to prove it!
“Of course he does!” Meilan laughed, “He IS your son, after all.”
Little Fei Hong gurgled contentedly in his father’s arms then without any warning, whoopsed his lunch all over the astonished man.
“GROSS!” Shrieked Ah Mei, as she flung herself from the mess and fled out of the room.
Wufei’s lips were pulled back from his teeth in a parody of a grin, one of utter revulsion. He too wanted to yell and run, but he just couldn’t. He did, after all, have his dignity to think about. He was an adult now. Adults did not scream just because a baby spit up on them. But it WAS gross! Without a word, he extended the now messy baby back towards his mother, who was doubled over in helpless laughter. Tears of mirth ran down her smooth cheeks.
“I’m s-sorry! Oh…Wufei! The look on your face! Oh, m’God! Help! I…can’t breathe! That was…truly…Priceless!”
Eventually the laughter subsided and Meilan heaved a huge sigh, the large grin still intact on her beautifully flushed face. Her onyx eyes twinkled as she took the baby from her silent husband. Kissing the baby on the forehead, she stood to fetch her diaper bag and the much needed supplies within.
“Did you whoops all over your daddy? Huh? Are you feeling better now? I guess lunch didn’t agree with your little tummy, did it?” Meilan glanced over her shoulder and dimpled a smile at her love. “I’ll go get a nurse to help get you clean up! ‘Kay, ‘Fei?”
“Yes.” Groused a very sour Wufei. “Please do.”
