It all began, strangely enough, with a single drop of rain falling from a threatening sky. Nothing more monumental than that. But that simple drop of rain was enough to change the course of a wayward young man's life forever.
Wufei glanced up towards the sky and frowned as that first drop of rain was followed closely by a second, and then a third. Raindrops were sociable things, he knew, and they preferred the company of their own kind, the more the merrier. Before many seconds passed, there were thousands of raindrops falling from the sky, filling the world with their hissing voices.
Desperately wishing for an umbrella, Wufei quickly gathered his bearings. He had been wandering aimlessly along a well-paved biking path that closely followed the meandering course of a small, unknown stream for well over an hour. There weren't any buildings nearby where he could take shelter form the rain, but up ahead about a quarter of a mile or so, there was an underpass where the walking trail passed under a large street.
A bolt of lightning streaked down from the storm clouds and the rain began to fall even harder. Cursing under his breath, the lean teenager sprinted in the direction of the underpass, his tattered duffel bag bouncing against his side with every long stride. His tennis shoes slapped the wet pavement, shooting up fountains of water from the rapidly forming puddles.
His arms and legs pumped furiously as he darted towards the only available shelter, but no matter how fast Wufei ran, he wasn't fast enough to escape the torrential rain. By the time he reached the underpass, he was soaking wet. His red striped shirt clung revealingly to his heaving chest and his jeans weighed dark and heavy on his lean legs. His shoes squelched with each step and his thick, black hair hung in tendrils around his flushed face.
Wearily, he lowered himself to the ground, leaned his back against the cement sides of the underpass, and pulled his wet legs to his chest in an attempt to conserve body heat. The day, which had started off hot and humid, had turned unseasonably chilly with the approach of the storm. A strong wind now howled from the north, pushing the rain into swirling ebbs that all but obliterated his view of the outside world.
Wufei gazed out with hypnotic wonder at the awesome power of Mother Nature. Sitting here like this, he thought, with no company other than the raging storm, it's as if I'm all alone in the world. He tried to push that thought away because although he didn't like to think about it, these thoughts were far more accurate than he would have liked to admit... even to himself.
He shivered mightily and wrapped his arms around his body, hugging himself for comfort as much as warmth. His teeth chattered so much his jaw ached but there was nothing he cold do but sit and wait out the rain. Making sure his duffel bag was safe besides him, Wufei closed his eyes and shifted his weight in a vain attempt to find a more comfortable position. There wasn't one.
Wufei's lids were heavy with sleep and he wanted nothing more than to stretch out, to use his bag as a pillow, and take a nap, but he didn't quite dare. Not here where anyone could walk by. It was too dangerous. It was easier to make a quick get away when you were propped up in an almost sitting position. Laying down was how they caught you unawares. That's how they got you, how they always got you. When you were asleep and helpless in your bed, the one place you would've thought you were safe.
But Wufei knew from experience that nowhere was safe. And the one lesson he had learned in all of his fifteen years was that you had to look out for yourself because no one else cared. You had to take care of yourself. Another hard-learned lesson had been that you couldn't trust anyone. Ever.
From where he huddled, Wufei could see nothing but rain beyond the edge of his makeshift shelter. The only sounds that reached his ears were those of impersonal nature, the crash and rumble of the thunder, the hiss of rain, and the riotous gurgling of the stream, now brown and choked with leaves and debris deposited by the runoff from the drain pipes. These sounds lulled his senses, relaxed his defenses. Despite his firm resolve to remain watchfully awake, Wufei's eyes slid closed and his mind began to first drift, then finally surrender to his body's desperate need for sleep.
After a long time, the storm finally blew itself out. Grey clouds parted and the last golden rays of sunlight slanted in under the bridge and fell upon Wufei's still form, warming it marginally. His shivers gradually subsided. Pools of water glowed golden as the sun sank slowly behind the horizon, and beads of water clung like precious crystals to the tree leaves and bent blades of grass. In the sky, a dim rainbow sparkled and shimmered, a gentle reminder of a biblical promise made long, long ago.
But the exhausted teenager was not aware of the beauty that unfolded in the world outside of his temporary shelter. The soft, rhythm pull of Wufei's shuddering breath deepened and became steady as he slipped deeper into sleep. Once, he stirred restlessly, his hands jerking spasmodically as if trying to protect himself from something or someone, before settling lightly back to his sides. A soft, desperate cry escaped his slightly parted lips. Then he stilled once more as he sank helplessly into the nightmare that had once been his life, a nightmare he had managed to escape, but still visited in his dreams.
