600seconds. Challenge – ‘Final Judgment’
He did not bow his head in submission or show any other outward appearance of having been defeated. Instead he held his head high and cast his dark, unblinking gaze upon the men and women of the jury, his peers. What a joke.
Yes, he had done everything he had been accused of and more…so much more. But they only had the evidence to convict him on this one case. Because he had grown careless, sloppy as his quest for violence spiraled to even greater heights. In a frenzy of bloodlust he had forgotten himself and in doing so he had ultimately condemned himself to this boring confinement.
The women flinched under his unruffled gaze, they looked away, horrified still at the atrocities he had committed. His victims were mothers, daughters, aunts and sisters. People, good, kind, and undeserving, each one reduced to nothing but so much meat and bones. For his pleasure.
The men met his gaze, and in more than a few eyes the prisoner saw disgust and contempt. Let them cocoon themselves in their cloak of moral superiority. By denying their inner beast they refused to live and that, friends and neighbors, was the real crime as he saw it. What he wanted, he took, what he desired, he possessed. He never deprived himself, never denied his thoughts, whims. When blood called, he answered. There was no crime in living a sensual life.
The only crime was that he had allowed himself to become careless. And so now here he was, dressed in prison orange, his hands cuffed effectively behind his back as he awaited the verdict of the twelve men and women standing in the jury box.
It did not surprise him that the verdict came back guilty.
He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
