600seconds. Prompt 12/5/05 - 'Shh...I've Got a Secret'
Leon scratched the mutt lazily behind the ears, liking the feel of his scruffy fur. Dogs were supposed to be Man’s best friend, and it was true. You could rely on a dog to protect you in times of danger, consol you in your pain, keep you company when you were lonely, and, this was most important, listen to you when you spilled out your troubles and woes when you thought no one else would care… or even understand.
“I just can’t get him out of my head,” Leon muttered, taking a long drag from his cigarette. The end flared red like a dying star. “And not because he’s some criminal mastermind or something like that. Hell, I know he’s guilty as sin… but that’s not why he’s getting under my skin.”
He glanced into those deep chocolate eyes and sighed. I wish I were a dog, he thought. Then things would be so much easier. You like someone, go up to them, sniff around, get down to business. Not like I’d handle things with the Count that way. The resulting mental image had him snorting laughter. Could you just see D’s face?
Leon pulled himself reluctantly to his feet, the dog following his example. He glanced down at his companion and smiled, feeling a small measure of relief now that he had unburdened his mind. Fishing into his jacket, he pulled out a dog snack. The mutt’s ears perked up and his tail wagged, expectantly.
“Sit, boy.” The dog sat. “Good boy.” He tossed the bone to the dog and grinned as he wolfed it down.
“Now, remember,” He murmured, turning to go, “This is just between you and me. Don’t go running off and telling the Count or no more milk bones for you.”
The dog barked as if in agreement and Leon knew they had come to an understanding.
THE END
I forgot how fun it could be to do timed writing challenges. I'm so glad
600seconds will be starting up again in 2007. I missed it, and I do better with small challenges than huge projects... though I should have spent that ten minutes getting ready for work instead of writing. *shrug* That's okay, I've still got time!
