I guess Leon Orcot in not as high up on the food chain as I thought

I found some interesting information on the ranking order at th LAPD.

In one story, a woman called Leon a third rate detective in a derogatory manner, so I'm assuming that he was at the lowest rank - Detective I. That makes sense, though, because he is rather young. He said he was eighteen when his mother died giving birth and now Chris is, what? Seven? Eight? I'm too tired/lazy/pressed for time to look it up. Anyway, that makes him twenty-five, maybe twenty-six depending on how their birthdays fall.

I just want to be accurate...

Interesting! I never thought Leon was extremely high up on the command chain. Actually, I never knew the command chain was so detailed - I thought there was one type for each group - Police Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, etc. So Leon's higher up than I thought he was, but still not very up there.

I knew detectives had ranks from watching 'Alien Nation' but I didn't know there were ranks for everything. I always thought Lieutenant was higher than Captain...my bad.

Hi, hope it's okay if I jump in! (I friended you back; I remember reading your fics on the Yahoo Group, and it's nice to see you here at LJ. ^_^)

Anyhow, according to the character profile in the manga (I think it was in book 2), Leon is 24 years old. I don't know if Akino-sensei had a specific rank in mind, but as he is pretty young to be a detective, I think it's likely that he'd be the lowest rank, so Detective I sounds good. Plus, to get promoted, Leon would probably have to be more politic towards his superiors, and that's unlikely with his personality. ;)

I often wonder how he made detective in the first place, and speculate that perhaps he got promoted for doing something spectacularly heroic as a patrolman, like maybe saving a hostage or stopping a bank robbery.

Good, then I'm not too far off. In book 10 Vesca said that Leon had been investigating D for nearly two years, which would make him roughly 25-26 depending on how far into his 24th year he was when he started.

According to one site I visited, you have to be a police officer with the LAPD for a minimum of four years before you can be promoted to either a detective or sergeant. Detectives are, apparently, more investigative, while Sergeants are more field supervision. I'm not sure about the higher ranks of Detective, but I think you're right - Leon doesn't have the personality to be political and I doubt he’d make serious advancements if diplomacy is necessary.
